Platform Supports Thousands at UNC Chapel Hill

Approximately 3,500 students created projects working on the UNC Chapel Hill Media Lab network during the 2013 academic school year. The Media Lab is divided into two parts, with one section available 24 hours. A combination of 22 iMacs and 8 MacPro Towers running Adobe Creative Suite 6 support student projects.
With this level of traffic, Greg Klaiber, UNC Media Lab Manager says the school was primarily looking for superior system performance in a shared storage server, and that they were willing to spend a little more if the system would work better for the teachers and students.
The school was evaluating Isilon storage and a couple other systems (a variety of 10 GbE, copper and fiber options) when a ProMAX email landed in Klaiber’s inbox reminding him that ProMAX would be worth looking into. He recalled that UNC’s communications department already had a ProMAX solution in place.

Tendril is a design, animation, and VFX Studio based in Toronto, Canada working with a wide variety of software including Adobe Creative Cloud, Autodesk 3ds Max, Maya and Flame. For a number of years, like many other post production shops, they had grown “organically”. The storage infrastructure consisted of multiple data servers, with users connected via 1 GB for almost 50 users and growing.
Partner Patrick Coffey started researching shared storage options and approached Jump I.T. to see what solutions best fit their needs. It was clear that a server would need to perform flawless under demanding workloads as Tendril moved to 6 and 7 day work weeks to meet the client demands. Product stability and support were a must.

Shared storage was a top priority for Tim Fanguy, Director of Video Production for the NBA’s New Orleans Pelicans. Equally important was finding efficient workflow solutions between the Pelicans’ post production studio within in the Smoothie King Center where they play, the game night control room located in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, and with their broadcast partners, FOX Sports, New Orleans. For a couple of years, Fanguy had been tracking different shared storage systems. He recalls, “ProMAX definitely piqued my interest because of the versatility of being a workflow server rather than just shared storage.” Shared storage was required, but getting the right files in the right formats fast was just as big of a need. The workflows that they wanted to do required complex transcoding beyond what other systems could handle. This year PT Interindo MultiMedia in Jakarta, integrated their ProMAX Platform Studio (which is designed to travel on location) into the TriCaster workflow for handling the live broadcast of the Java Sounds Fair Music and Art Festival. Djundi Karjadi says, “I always wanted to include shared storage in a TriCaster workflow. “Before utilizing ProMAX Platform, all the ISOs from the different stages were spread all over many hard disks, “Djundi explains, adding “We had to spend a lot of time matching which camera belonged to which performance, and then move them into one after the event was over. Now Platform handles all that organization for us as the show is happening.
When the time came to deliver the clients the combined clips, it was so easy because everything is already organized from the time we started the production.”

ʻŌiwi TV is serving as media partner for the Polynesian Voyaging Society’s multi-year expedition of the Hokule’a and its escort vessel the Hikianalia, to bring this vibrant cultural and educational program to worldwide audiences. Preparing for documenting the journey, they knew they would accumulate large quantities of media on this voyage. They also knew that if they didn’t properly organize, and media manage it, that it would be a disaster. Lee explains, “The problem was, we needed more than just storage, we needed everything from networking to Media Asset Management, to long term archival storage. Looking at Platform the idea of a workflow server really made sense to us.” A ProMAX Online Platform workflow server with 634TB SHARE, DAM, TRANSCODE and ARCHIVE modules is currently supporting ʻŌiwi TV’s ongoing productions on land and at sea. Ten seats of CatDV support their team’s asset management and a pair of LTO6 drives serving all archiving processes. Another key aspect of the media workflow is an existing RAID array that Lee was able to connect to Platform to utilize as Tier 2 storage. Lee says, “I can sleep at night now, because I know that our archive is safe. I’m really confident in the stability of the product and now that we’ve backed things up to LTO, and we have a disaster recovery copy that is all catalogued, it’s changed everything.”
