One of my mentors always use to say "Buy nice, or buy twice!" Sometimes I do this, sometimes I don't. We all pick and choose things that we go big on and things we cheap out on.
About a year ago or so, it was time for a new phone but I had some other expenses coming that I needed to plan for. I considered switching from an iPhone to an Android and part of that was because I was kinda pissed at Apple for charging $1,000 for a phone! Come on Apple!
I went and got the LG Stylo 4, and it only ended up costing about $250. Moving from iPhone to Android I was actually really impressed with this LG. It worked well, had a big screen and the only it was crappy at was taking photographs. At the time I didn't want to pay that Apple premium just for photos.
Fast-forward a bit and now we're doing a lot of these blogs which I record on my phone everyday. Suddenly, the quality of the mic and the camera all matter to me! So what do I do, I go out and buy a new phone. It's awesome and has some great features!
But how many times do we do this? You're trying to save a buck and then you end up spending the same amount later when you need an upgrade.
Where is your business doing this? Being a premium storage for video vendor we see this with customers that go towards the lower end NAS systems. They're good systems, you can edit off them, but they don't scale the right way or provide the support that many companies need. You also don't get the video performance when you get a lot of users hitting the system. These systems also don't have the extra features and functionalities like proxy generation, search and some of the other stuff you need to do professional video!
We have replaced so many of these things for people, just like I did with my phone! So start thinking about future-proofing when looking to buy these types of products.
