Today I made a deadly mistake, my very pregnant wife sent me a text today with a picture of my wedding ring sitting in the bathroom, looks like I forgot to put it on this morning before heading into the office.
She's about to go into labor anytime now so she just wanted to remind me that I am still responsible despite not having my ring on. I doubled checked, looks like it's hidden in the fine print of our marriage contract so I guess I'll go along with it.
This made me start wondering...
What are those things we're responsible for and what are those things that aren't clearly outlined and people don't know they're responsible for?
I see this in businesses all the time, my business, my friend's businesses and even our customers. What I've seen is that a lot of the time there is no one responsible for data.
That's super scary right?! Especially for our customers because their data is their product, their everything! Way to often we see that there isn't a specific person who is responsible for data!
If data gets lost or destroyed, who's fault is that? Who is responsible for making sure that doesn't happen and you have the right precautions in place.
Talk to your team, figure out who is responsible in your company for your data. It's a very simple but extremely important question. A lot of the time when you ask it, you'll be surprised at how many people think everyone else is responsible, and that's really scary!
